Culture Jamming is all about using messages as a tool. Sometimes these messages, through language and/or image, are intended to be threatening, inciting, and angry, but they are always meant to be thought provoking. Public forms of Culture Jamming usually include a pre-existing message, like a billboard for a beer company with text either removed or added to change the meaning of the advertisement. The resulting image is meant to expose the often sexist, racist, classist, ageist, and whatever other negative “ist” you have, that drives the original ad. Most advertisements are meant to belittle some group, either the intended target of the ad to cause internal feelings of self-doubt and a lack of self-worth, or they demean a group outside of the target audience, such as using scantily clad, or depowered women to attract straight males.
