There was something in the air, not clouds, but a thin dusty shimmer permeating the rolling roadside hills. It seemed strange that there was no smell at first. As the sky shifted from grey to red, the charred wind lit up my olfactory. Seeing was believing. We passed through the engulfed hillside just as the flames were reaching the road. Brave women and men stood nearby to confront the steady and raw power of nature’s great equalizer — wildfires.
